Lotus Dickey Dies at 77

By Jean Metcalfe

Looking back to Lotus Dickey's appearance on the Louisville Homefront Performances stage on May 13 of this year, I can still vividly remember how much I enjoyed his music. In reporting on the concert in our June 1989 issue, I said that it was "as fine a show as this writer has enjoyed" on an LHP stage, adding, "and there have been many fine shows."

When Bob Lucas, who appeared with Dickey, was introducing the old gospel tune 'His Eye ls On the Sparrow," he said that it was his father's favorite song. Dickey related that it was his own personal favorite as well. And how I enjoyed their performance of it. Lucas sang the melody and Dickey provided the harmony. I'd love to hear it again and again; it brings back such wonderful memories.

That was my one and only opportunity to hear the beloved folk musician and master fiddler and l am very fortunate to have had that opportunity.

Lotus Dickey died on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 23, at the age of 77, in Paoli, Indiana.
