The Rays On The Belle

By Mark Sickles

Becky Bennett and Kelly Wilkinson, aka The Rays, were joined by Ken Lucchese on guitar and Hickory Vaught on mandolin for two sets during a cruise on the Belle of Louisville, Wednesday, August 16.

The sold-out cruise was sponsored by Nardi Bridges, owner of Patrick's on Frankfort Avenue. The Mighty Water Kings supplied the dance music.

The Rays opened with the Indigo Girls' current hit "Closer To Fine," and included other Indigo tunes such as "Land Of Canaan" and "Secure Yourself." Their harmonies were the tight arrangements that their fans have come to expect and Lucchese's guitar provided a solid underpinning. Vaught, former mandolin player for the Kentucky Ramblers, wove interesting leads in and around the vocals.

Both sets were closed with the Sweethearts Of The Rodeo tune "Hey Doll Baby," which received by an enthusiastic crowd. The Rays were thrilled by their reception and by the opportunity to play on the Belle and on the same bill with the Mighty Water Kings.
