Spring is here, flowers are bloomin' and so are the song contests. The Songwriters Association of Washington (SAW) has a contest with a $1,000 grand prize and a $15 entry fee for non-members for the first entry, $13 for each additional entry. The deadline is July 31, 1993. Call 1-800-394-4530 for entry forms. There are additional prizes for 2nd and 3rd place.

Billboard magazine's Fifth Annual Song Contest has been announced. The Grand Prize is $5,000 cash plus a BMG publishing contract, a Gibson Chet Atkins SST guitar and a Dean Markley K150 amplifier. There are also six First Prizes of $1,000 each, plus a Chet Atkins SST guitar and a BMG publishing contract.

Seven second prizes will be awarded: a Gibson Epiphone PR-350 guitar to each second-place writer.

There is a $15 per entry fee. The deadline for entries is August 31 , 1993. For more information, contact the LASC office or Billboard magazine.

Of course, our own song contest will get underway later on this summer, with a $1,000 Grand Prize.

If you think it's "tuff" getting a cut, imagine this: according to the Starquest Newsletter, such acts as The Oak Ridge Boys, Earl Thomas Conley, The Forester Sisters and Lacy J. Dalton no longer have labels. Also, Starquest reports that Liberty and Sony have signed the largest number of new acts, each with 28. 9.

Finally, Roland reps will be in town July 21-25, 1993. conducting their Keyboard Technology Seminar at the University of Louisville. This is a rare opportunity for keyboardists or "wannabees," so make plans to attend. For more information call 213-685-5141, ext. 416.
