Monarchs

By Earl Meyers

Mayor Jerry Abramson's favorite local band, The Monarchs, took the stage at Highland Legion Post on October 2 to help raise money to build ramps and other access needs for the Center for Accessible Living.

Perhaps best remembered for their sixties hit "Look Homeward Angel" (written by Wally Gold), the group prompted me to kick the dust off some of my rusty dance moves, along with family members and others in the half-filled hall.

Most of the songs were '60s and '7Os numbers such as "Devil with the Blue Dress On," mixed with some Sam & Dave, Platters and a few covers of more-current numbers by the Oak Ridge Boys and Brooks & Dunn's "Boot Scootin' Boogie."

It was a fun evening and although the Monarchs are a few years older, they're smoother on the ballads, the harmonies are always good and I experience a certain amount of nostalgia each time I catch their act.
