Golden Nugget to Stage Original Music Summer Series

By Paul Moffett

The Golden Nugget has long been known as a bar for college rock, classic rock and current covers, according to manager and part-owner George Timmering Jr. Many of the bands that play there have some originals, however. For those bands and others, the Nugget will offer the "Summer Music Showcase," an original music show on Wednesdays.

The eight week series, beginning on May 11 and running through June, will be more than just an original music spot, however. Members of the band will also be interviewed during the 7:00 p.m. "Local Music Show," broadcast on WQMF Too 105.9 on the Monday before the band plays on Wednesday. They will be the featured "Artists of the Week;" and their CD will be played. Two shows during the eight weeks will also be broadcast live, according to Timmering.

Bands that have never played the Nugget before, including such groups as the Floating Men, will also be booked. The first act is (tentatively) the Floating Men, with Smokehouse and Hula Hoop on the immediate horizon.

Timmering thinks that the Nugget's intimate atmosphere will be good for listening to the original music that favorite bands have to offer. There may be an opening act for each band.

Booking at the Nugget has changed since November 1990, from country to rock. Timmering and co-owners and cousins Joe and Chris Steier think that the combination of bands with a following, plus radio and print exposure, will result in a solid turnout for the Wednesday show.
