Writer Jule Styne, whose song "Three Coins in the Fountain" won him an Academy Award in 1954, died Sept. 20, according to an AP article in the Sept. 21 Courier-Journal. Styne was recuperating from open-heart surgery undergone six weeks earlier.
Styne's family emigrated from London to the U.S. when he was six years old. In 1916, some four years later, he became a U.S. citizen.
Styne wrote "People," "Make Someone Happy," the music for the Broadway shows "Funny Girl" and "Gypsy" and several songs in "Peter Pan."
He was a brilliant pianist at age eleven and, although a finger injury changed his career, Jule Style left the world some fabulous music to play and enjoy.
Styne was 88.
