Truly Special Gifts

Something Special (Columbia / Blue Eye Records)
Dolly Parton

By Michael W. Stout

Something Special treats the listener to two of the multi-talented Dolly Parton's truly special gifts: her wonderful ability to translate a soul's deepest emotions into song and then proceed to sing it in her own unique, angelic country fashion with enough honesty to convince even the most skeptical of its genuineness.

Dolly proves that a country classic will withstand the test of time by successfully recycling three of her self-penned tunes from the 1970s: her brassy number one "Jolene," her gospel-flavored "The Seeker," and her biggest, record-breaking smash hit, "I Will Always Love You," this time with none other than the incredible Vince Gill as a duet partner. Vince and Dolly create unspeakable harmonies on this bittersweet classic that will almost inevitably break yet more records, making this Dolly's third time to take "I Will Always Love You" to the top of the charts.

In addition, tunes such as "Green-Eyed Boy," "No Good Way Of Saying Good-Bye" and the title track round out this fine collection of ten of Parton's best-written songs to date. Unfortunately, the majority of the material here is not extremely commercial, yet some of the most heartfelt country music you could listen to. Dolly settles for nothing less than the best, proving this by gathering the best pickers in Nashville to play on this record and inviting friends such as Pam Tillis, Alison Krauss and Suzanne Cox to help out on vocals. This record will add "Something Special" to anyone's CD collection.
