<h2 class="headline">National Quartet Convention: How sweet the sound . . . </h2>
<p class="normalfirst">Howard and Vestal Goodman sat for a photo on Sept. 25 during the 41st annualNational Quartet Convention at Freedom Hall.</p>
<p class="normal">Glen Payne, at left, and George Younce, right, signed copies of their book, The Cathedrals, at the NQC. The Cathedrals were named Favorite Group at the annual awards show the previous evening. </p>
<p class="normal">An emotional farewell performance by the revered Speers earned a standing ovation from an audience of some 20,000 fans of Southerngospel music. The original group was founded by the late  &quot;Mom &quot; &amp; &quot;Pop &quot; Speer more than 75 years ago. </p>
