UK Spotlight Jazz Series Update

By Martin Z. Kasdan, Jr

Following inspiring performances by the Terence Blanchard Quintet and the Herbie Hancock Quartet in the fall, the 25th Anniversary Season of the University of Kentucky's Spotlight Jazz Series continued with a stirring performance by the Dave Holland Quintet on Saturday, February 1, 2003. With six years of playing together under their collective belts, drummer Billy Kilson, vibraphonist Steve Nelson, trombonist Robin Eubanks and saxophonist Chris Potter joined bassist/leader Holland in bringing the capacity audience at the Lexington Opera House to its feet in well-deserved applause after an almost two-hour performance. Featuring pieces written by all but Potter, these master musicians demonstrated how to bridge the seemingly insurmountable gap between swing and avant-garde. The season will conclude with the jazz violin of Regina Carter on Sunday, March 2, 2003 8:00 pm, also at the Lexington Opera House. Carter has previously graced Louisville, and her visit to Lexington should provide local fans with another opportunity to hear this talented artist. For ticket information, call 859/257-8427.
