Dave Samuels

Dave Samuels

Mallet artist Dave Samuels returned to Louisville for another appearance with our own Dick Sisto on Saturday, February 7, at the Seelbach Jazz Bar. Samuels, an inventive and accomplished musician on both vibraphone and marimba, seemed to bring out the best in Sisto. Accompanied by stalwarts Tyrone Wheeler on bass and Jason Tiemann on drums, Sisto played vibes and Samuels played marimba for a lengthy exploration of Leon Russell's "This Masquerade." Throughout the course of the first set, Samuels switched back and forth between vibes and marimba, while Sisto occasionally took a turn at the piano. Toward the end of the set, they were joined by a young conga player who added spice to the Dizzy Gillespie classic "Night in Tunisia." Samuels records under his own name and with the Caribbean Jazz Project for the Concord label and has a back catalogue of recordings on other labels as well.
