Musical Medicine

When The Morning Comes (Rebel Records)

Paul Williams & The Victory Trio

By Bob Mitchell

When it comes to Bluegrass Gospel music, it doesn't get much better than Paul Williams. Last year there was a rumor to the effect that Williams was retiring, but 2006 is beginning on a bright note because he did not retire. In fact, he released another stellar project with the Victory Trio. When The Morning Comes provides first rate harmonies and Williams' trademark heartfelt vocals with a message guaranteed to replenish a dwindling supply of hope in a world fraught with problems.

Williams and the Victory Trio endow every song with honesty, which is especially evident in "Are You Washed In The Blood," the title track and "I Know, I Know." Williams sings lead and tenor vocals (along with providing some steady and tasteful mandolin chops.) Mike Grove contributes baritone vocals while Karen Benton adds a sincere high baritone. Billy Proffitt supplies a warm lead vocal on eight cuts. I especially enjoyed "I'm A Little Closer To My Lord" and "In Heaven She'll Live On and On." The hardest working person on the album is the exceptionally talented David Johnson who played guitar, fiddle, banjo, Dobro and acoustic bass. His music support added depth and feeling to each song but especially on "He's Answered Each Prayer."

This recording is musical medicine for those in need of spiritual comfort. Comfort yourself further at www.rebelrecords.com.
