Award-Winning Bluegrass Promise

Cold Lonely Night (Independent)
The Martins

By Bob Mitchell

The talented Martin family consists of Larita (17) on Dobro and vocals, Janice (19) on Banjo and vocals, Dale (20) on Guitar and vocals, Jeana (21) on Fiddle and vocals and Elvin (Dad) on bass and vocals.

The band is passionate about the music they only began playing in 1999. And, amazingly, their exciting style of bluegrass is self-taught. Not only does each member contribute to tight vocal arrangements but also provides strong instrumental support. This project is enjoyable hard-driving bluegrass from start to finish.

A short list of industry national recognitions includes first place in the 2007 SPBGMA International Band Championship and in the 2002 Silver Dollar City Youth In Bluegrass Contest. Additionally, SPBGMA Midwest Awards include Instrumental Group of the Year (five years in a row - 2004-2008), Banjo Performer of the Year (Janice in 2006 and 2007), and Dobro Performer of the Year (Larita in 2007).

Musical highlights include the tight harmony and high lonesome sound of "Lonesome Whistle," the straight-ahead title track, and instrumental "Tom and Jerry," and a brisk "Knee Deep In Bluegrass." The family's impressive debut recording is totally satisfying. Their potential is unlimited and this reviewer looks forward to the next release.
